Documentary project on Cederberg land claims

29 May 2018 - 11:30

The CCA’s oral history project in the Cederberg districts of the Western Cape, has given rise to a new film project by Dr Siona O’Connell, Uitgesmyt: Elandskloof and the quest for freedom.

According to Lauren Platsky and Cheryl Walker (1984), it is estimated that in the period 1960-1982, about 3.5 million people experienced evictions under various race-based relocation policies in apartheid South Africa. Uitgesmyt considers the question of rural forced evictions and the complexities around return, restoration and restitutive justice by looking at Elandskloof, Algeria and Citrusdal in the Cedarberg region.

These rural towns eptisimise the catastrophic nature of colonialism, slavery and affords an opportunity  to understanding historical trauma as being located in the present. It highlights the difficulties as well as the urgency to develop tools to navigate this landscape that is simultaneously both new and old.

This project is a collaboration between the CCA and the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the  University of Pretoria.

To be launched 12 July 2018
