South

South, a photographers’ collective and photo agency, continued from the collective photographic movement of the 1980s, which played a seminal role in the development of documentary photography in apartheid South Africa. Acquiring the work of a number of South’s foremost documentary photographers of such an historically significant era is one of the achievements of Paul Weinberg during his tenure as Curator at the CCA. Among others, this group includes Guy Tillim, Paul Grendon, George Hallett, Chris Ledochowski, Santu Mofokeng, Graeme Williams and Paul Weinberg. Several of these photographers are internationally acclaimed, with work housed in important museums and collections across the world. The physical collection totals almost 30 000 prints and slides (including David Goldblatt’s commercial work) and over 17 000 digital scans. Paul continues to build on this collection at the new Visual Archive of the Manuscripts and Archives division of the University’s library.
